(OS map references in brackets) | START: Lyndhurst (SU 30772 08075) 1 From the car park near the cemetery, walk towards the cemetery wall and then follow the wall going east. At the corner, turn left and continue following the cemetery boundary. 2 At the corner of a wire fence, follow the grassy path going north-east through gorse bushes and parallel to the main road. 3 As you enter the woods, take the path to the right which goes through the trees. 4 Continue on the main grassy track which goes through the trees in an easterly direction. 5 Cross the wooden bridge across a small stream just before it joins a larger stream. Follow this larger stream east until you reach another wooden bridge (at SU 32345 08719). 6 Cross the bridge and walk parallel to the river along a grassy area in an easterly direction. Look for a path in the heather that goes east towards the trees. 7 When you reach the fence of Ashurst Lodge (SU 33330 08869), turn right (south east) and follow the fence to the end of the trees. 8 As the fence turns, continue in the same direction as you were taking. After a field boundary, cross the bridge over the river and continue on the main sandy track passing a tumulus on your right 9 At a cross roads by some large gorse bushes, take the path to the left. 10 Continue until you have passed the next small gorse bush and you can see a railway bridge ahead, then turn right and head across the plain (east-south-east). There is no obvious path. 11 On the plain head for the left side of the wood; you will be walking almost parallel to the railway line. 12 Turn right when you reach the trees to cross the stream. There is no bridge - you will have to find a suitable place to cross! Carry straight on after crossing the stream parallel to the railway line for about 500 metres. 13 At the end of the line of trees, look for a gap in the fence below the railway embankment. Take the path towards the underpass (SU 34750 07284). 14 As you come out of the underpass, follow the path straight ahead through the heather. 15 Continue straight on towards the trees. Do not take the main path which heads over the hill. 16 Follow the path into the woods and go past Decoy Pond Farm. Cross the tarmac road and take the path through the woods beyond the houses. 17 Continue on the grassy path as it comes out of the woods, heading towards the chimneys at Fawley. 18 At SU 36720 06755 about one kilometre from Decoy Pond Farm, take the track to the right which goes gently up the hill.
