START: Burbush Hill car park, south of Burley (SU 20205 01760)

From the car park, head south-east across the grassy area towards the trees.

Cross over the small stream and take the path through the trees. Continue on the sandy path that skirts the edge of the gorse bushes and heads towards the telegraph wires.

At the junction with a more major path, turn left and go uphill. (SU 20602 01817)

Continue on this track for about 600 metres until you reach a major track on the right. Follow this track through the heather. (SU 21069 02196)

The path will eventually go downhill towards a causeway across a stream. Just before the causeway, take a path to the right that goes under the telegraph wires. (SU 21506 01877)

Cross the boggy area on the causeway and continue on the path up to the dismantled railway line. (SU 21410 01707)

When you arrive at the railway bank you can see the remains of the level crossing gates that were here at what was known as Shappen Crossing. You can also see the remains of the crossing keeper's cottage. Go over the track, past the cottage ruins and head uphill through the gorse bushes.

You will eventually come out of the gorse bushes and into heather. The path is quite narrow at times and difficult to see but continue in the same general direction as much as possible. (SU 21196 01093)

You will sooner or later meet a major sandy track. Turn right on the track heading west.

(SU 20609 01052) Continue downhill heading for the left side of Whitten Pond.

Continue walking round the top of the pond. At the Forestry Commission sign (Whitten Pond), take the path going north - not to the road.

When the path forks, go right.

13. On reaching the old railway line turn left. Follow the path and turn right to reach the car park.
